Stacker Weight Limits & Floor Load Ratings Explained

When you look at a stacker’s specs, the weight rating is usually the first thing you notice. You’ll see numbers like 1,000 kg, 1,200 kg, or 1,500 kg, and it’s easy to treat that as the main decision point. But how the stacker fits into your building matters just as much.

What a Stacker’s Capacity Really Tells You

A stacker’s rated capacity is measured under controlled conditions. The load is balanced, the pallet size matches the design, and the centre of gravity sits exactly where the manufacturer expects it to be.

On a working floor, things are rarely that neat and simple for example, pallets overhang, loads aren’t always uniform, and operators lift at different heights throughout the day. Each of those factors changes how weight moves through the mast and into the wheels.

It’s also easy to forget that the rating only refers to the load itself. The stacker’s own weight, often several hundred kilograms, is part of what your floor has to carry as well.

Why Floors Matter More Than Most Buyers Expect

Floors don’t usually fail because something is heavy. They fail because weight is concentrated in a small area consistently.

A pallet resting on the ground spreads its weight across multiple contact points, but a stacker, on the other hand, channels most of that combined weight through a few wheels. That means the pressure directly under each wheel can be much higher than the total load number suggests.

Most industrial floors are designed for a specific load rating, either as a distributed load or a point load. If that limit is pushed too often, you don’t always see immediate damage, however more commonly, it shows up later as cracks, surface wear, or uneven sections. These can all affect handling and safety later down the line, not just for the stacker but for other machines that move through your warehouse.

Lift Height Changes the Equation

As the mast goes up, the centre of gravity shifts forward, what this does is put more force onto the front load wheels and reduces the margin for uneven floors or small slopes. That’s why stackers often have different capacity ratings depending on how high you’re lifting the load.

From a buying perspective, it’s important to think about how you’ll actually use the machine. A stacker that can handle heavy loads at floor level may need to be de-rated for regular high-rack work, both for stability and for floor impact.

Matching the Machine to the Building

Newer warehouses are usually designed with powered handling equipment in mind, while in contrast older industrial buildings, mezzanine levels, and converted spaces often aren’t.

If you’re not sure what your floor is rated for, building plans or a facilities manager can usually point you in the right direction. In higher-risk environments, a quick assessment by a structural engineer can prevent much bigger costs later down the line.

Areas near dock edges, expansion joints, and drains deserve special attention, these tend to be the first places where stress shows up.

Making a Smarter Purchase Decision

Instead of choosing a stacker based only on the heaviest pallet you move, think about the full setup: your floor, your lift heights, and how often the machine will be working near its upper limits.

In some cases, a slightly lower-capacity stacker that runs comfortably within its range will perform better long term than a higher-rated machine that’s constantly operating at the edge of what your building can support.

This is also where talking through your site layout and load profile with a supplier makes a real difference. The right advice upfront can save you from cracked floors, unstable handling, and early equipment wear.

Planning Beyond the First Year

Most floor and stability issues don’t appear immediately, instead they build up over thousands of lifts and long daily cycles. Choosing a stacker that fits both your loads, and your facility helps keep operations smooth, reduces maintenance, and protects the investment you’re making in both your equipment and your warehouse.
