Sappi takes delivery of custom-made forklifts from Goscor

Well known wood pulp, paper pulp and paper-based solutions manufacturer Sappi South Africa, has taken delivery of five Doosan D45S-5 forklifts from leading forklift and warehouse equipment supplier Goscor Lift Truck Company (GLTC).
The Doosan D45S-5 forklifts were supplied to the Stanger and Pinetown Sappi mills in October 2014, and were custom fitted with a 5600FFT mast that allows the forklift to fit into a container if needed, an additional 4th valve used to control the paper role clamp, a paper role clamp attachment, complete forklift fleet management (FMX) system which operates via a GPRS network, and a tower light that displays the pressure levels being placed on a paper roll.
The FMX tool installed on the forklifts is designed to improve efficiency, and has assisted Sappi with their driver, fuel and machine management operations. Further, Sappi says GLTC delivered excellent service throughout the entire process.
“These customisations were made on the forklifts because Sappi handle paper rolls with a height of up to 7.2 meters,” says Sappi DC Manager of kraft and fine paper Amith Ramdhani. The standard Doosan D45S-5 is commonly used in manufacturing, pipe, lumber, brick, block, recycling, steel and aluminium applications.
The Doosan D45S-5 comes with a powerful and fuel efficient LP gas or diesel engine that provides high horsepower ratings and complies with ETA Tier III emission regulations. The heavy duty planetary drive axle coupled with electric shift transmission, transfers high torque to the drive wheels for maximum productivity.
The Doosan’s operator cabin has been ergonomically designed with a deck mounted hydraulic control lever, fully adjustable steer column, automotive style operator pedals, and full suspension seat that keeps operators comfortable throughout operating shifts.
Since their delivery late last year, the customised forklifts have been performing well. “The forklifts are impressive, and even though they are compact, they are continuing to work very well at Sappi,” says Ramdhani.
